LED lighting
What impact has LED lightning at home and in the streets?
In recent years there has been a transition from traditional lighting methods to LED lighting. In Europe in particular, the adoption of this form of lighting is being actively promoted through various directives and regulations. This widespread adoption of LED lamps is taking place mainly for the following reasons:
- High energy efficiency: LED lamps consume up to 90% less energy compared to traditional incandescent lamps. This results in lower energy bills and a smaller environmental footprint.
- Longevity: The lifetime of LED lamps sometimes reaches even 25,000 hours which leads to fewer replacements reducing future costs.
- Durability: They are quite a durable way of lighting as they are more breakage tolerant thanks to their solid-state construction.
- Environmental benefits: As LED bulbs do not contain toxic chemicals such as mercury, this makes them safer. Moreover, this feature makes these lamps easier to recycle.
There is widespread use of these lamps both in households and on the streets. More specifically, LED lighting is used to upgrade street lighting. Several European cities such as London, Amsterdam and Copenhagen have implemented initiatives to replace street lighting with LEDs in order to benefit from reduced energy consumption, reduced maintenance costs and improved visibility. Despite all the positive aspects of this lighting, the use of LEDs in street lighting raises concerns on the issue of blue light pollution as it may disrupt circadian rhythms and affect star visibility.
In summary, households in Europe, understanding the benefits of LED lighting, are adopting this more sustainable lighting solution.
